Irena finished her studies at the Faculty of Economics at University of Ljubljana and later finished her postgraduate studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences with a master’s degree. As of 2004 she is working as Secretary General of the Slovenian Directors’ Association. Her career is professionally dedicated to Corporate Governance (CG) consultancy, research, development of professional standards, as well as to educational and directors’ certification activities. She is a co-author of different CG research, studies, codes, and best practice principles. She works as a CG consultant and a Board evaluation facilitator. She is a regular lecturer at seminars and conferences. In 2007, she was awarded for her contribution to CG development in Slovenia.

In 2006, she became a Board Member of the European Confederation of Directors’ Association (ecoDa) in Brussels and a member of various committees and working groups of ecoDa. In April 2017, she started a two-year mandate as ecoDa chair. She is a member of the European Corporate Governance Codes Network. In 2009, she started working with the IFC and World Bank initiative, the IFC Corporate Governance Group. Since then she works as a World Bank temporary consultant on CG projects in the Euro-Asian region.

From April 2010 to April 2017 she was a Supervisory Board member and later a Vice-Chairwoman and Audit Committee member of Petrol, d.d., Ljubljana, Slovenia’s largest listed company. In the past she has been a member of different Nomination Committees. Since 2013 she is a member of the Nomination Committee at the Slovenian Restitution Company.
